The new minimum wage of $20.50 has come into effect from today and the Labour Ministry is urging employers to be compliant.
The 17% increase to the minimum wage was announced by Finance Minister Colm Imbert in the 2023/24 National Budget.
According to the Labour Ministry, employers of Minimum Wage Workers have obligations via the Minimum Wages Act to:
• Keep, maintain and retain wage records for a period of three (3) years in order to show compliance
• Provide the Inspector with information about wages and terms and conditions of work
• Allow the Inspector to inspect wage records and pay sheets
• Permit the Inspector to interview workers
The Ministry notes that it has been working to ensure compliance to the law and collected over one million dollars in arrears in 2023.
