Kirk is now a hurricane.

The National Hurricane Centre says maximum sustained winds have increased to near 120 km/h, with higher gusts.

Additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours and Kirk is expected to become a major hurricane by Thursday.

Despite this, the NHC says are no hazards affecting land, and no watches or warnings in place at this time.

Meanwhile eyes are also on another area of low pressure in the vicinity.

According to the NHC, environmental conditions appear conducive for further development of this system, with a tropical depression expected to form during the next day or two.

This system is currently moving slowly westward.
