Kenya pauses plans to send 1,000 police officers to Haiti

Kenya has decided to put a hold on plans to send police to Haiti under a UN-backed multinational mission.

The move came after Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry agreed to step aside as armed gangs have taken over much of the Caribbean nation.

A report by The New York Times quoted one Kenyan official is quoted as saying that the deployment will not happen now because they will require a sitting government to collaborate with.

They will now reportedly await the installation of a new authority in Haiti, before taking further decisions on the matter.

The mission to deploy 1,000 Kenyan police officers was sanctioned by the United Nations and largely financed by the United States, which on Monday pledged to provide more aid.

It has however been challenged and delayed by Kenyan court rulings on the lawfulness of the deployment.
