JTUM condemns proposed salary increase for PM, Opposition Leader

JTUM Leader Ancel Roget has condemned the proposed salary hike for several public office holders including the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader.

According to reports, the increases would be effective from October 1st 2020, with the PM’s monthly salary moving from $59,680 to $80,000, while the Opposition Leader’s will increase from $29,590 to $47,500.

Meanwhile the President’s monthly salary will reportedly move from $64,270 to $73,920, which means the Prime Minister would subsequently become the highest paid public official.

Flanked by a number of union representatives at a media briefing today, Mr Roget accused the Government of enforcing a 4% increase on workers, with some retirees yet to even collect the increase.

He added that the laying of the report by the Salaries Review Commission was “vexatious” and that the proposed increases should have been immediately turned down by the Finance Minister.

Mr Roget insisted that Government needs to do right by the workers of T&T, before considering any increase for the PM and other officials.
