Jamaica’s suicide rate increases by 26%

Jamaica’s suicide rate increased by 26% in 2022 according to the latest data.

According to the Jamaica Gleaner, there were 64 suicides in 2022 compared to 51 in 2021 – men accounted for over 90% of the victims.

The country’s overall suicide rate is two per 100,000 people – the global average is 9.2 per 100,000.

However, Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton previously said that the matter is still one of concern.

Research has reported indicated that family disruption, relationship problems, social isolation, trauma, grief, loss, and economic problems are among the risk factors for suicide.
