Jamaica to send 24 security personnel to Haiti

Jamaica will deploy 24 military and police personnel to Haiti on Thursday to support an international security mission.

Back in March, Jamaica pledged 200 personnel for the UN-backed mission aimed at helping Haiti battle gangs which have taken over much of the capital Port au Prince.

According to Reuters, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced on Tuesday that its initial deployment will be sent on Thursday.

The group is expected to help lay out the command structure to prepare for further deployments.

The UN-backed security mission is being led by Kenya, but the mandate of the mission is set to expire at the start of October.

A 15-member council is due to vote on September 30th on the mandate’s renewal.
