Israel’s foreign minister says Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar has been killed in Gaza.

Israel believes Sinwar is a key figure in the planning and execution of the October 7th attacks on Israel last year.

According to Al Jazeera, a joint statement from the Israeli army and the domestic security agency, Shin Bet, says Sinwar was killed yesterday during an operation in the southern Gaza Strip: “A force of the 828th Brigade, which operated in the area, identified and eliminated three terrorists. After completing the process of identifying the body, it can now be confirmed that [Sinwar] was eliminated.”

Separately, authorities say an Israeli air strike on a school-turned-shelter killed 22 people in Jabalia in northern Gaza.

BBC News says Israel claims the site was being used as an operational meeting point for Hamas and Islamic Jihad operatives, however Hamas has denied this.
