Iran launches ballistic missiles at Israel in retaliation for overnight strikes

Iran has launched ballistic missiles at Israel, as its supreme leader vows to “inflict heavy blows” in response to Israel’s overnight strikes.

BBC News says 40 people are being treated in Israeli hospitals following the retaliatory strike, including two in critical condition.

Earlier, the IDF said three Iranian military commanders were killed in last night’s strikes, while Tehran says six scientists were also killed.

US President Donald Trump has urged Iran to make a deal on its nuclear programme, warning of “even more brutal” Israeli attacks.

At a UN Security Council meeting in New York, Iran’s representative, Amir-Saeid Iravani says the “barbaric and criminal” attacks targeted nuclear facilities, civilian infrastructure and residential areas in Iran.

He says 78 people have so far been killed and more than 320 injured – the “overwhelming majority” of them are allegedly civilians.

Mr Iravani adds that the “deliberate and systematic” killings were a “chilling display of calculated aggression” and accused the US of “complicit” after providing “aid and assistance”.

He has since called on the Security Council to condemn Israel’s action and hold them accountable.

The meeting was requested earlier by Iran after Israel’s strikes.
