Institute of Marine Affairs investigating hydrocarbon leak in Chaguaramas

The Institute of Marine Affairs is investigating a hydrocarbon leak in Chaguaramas.

Yesterday, Fishermen and Friends of the Sea Corporate Secretary, Gary Aboud, shared a video showing a ship partially submerged on the southern side of Monos Island.

The vessel, sailing under the Guyanese flag and destined for St Vincent, was seen capsizing after its load of bricks shifted.

FFOS said a hydrocarbon substance was subsequently seen leaking from the bilge.

Institute Director Dr Ava Maxam told 103.1FM News this morning that an IMA team has taken samples, which will be used to determine the contents of the spill.

Meanwhile, FFOS is calling on the Energy Ministry to activate the National Oil Spill Contingency Plan and deploy booms to contain the pollution.
