Inmate injured in prison fracas dies

One of the inmates injured in a recent fracas at the Port of Spain Prison has died.

In a statement, the Prison Service said 26-year-old Sherlon Brown passed away around 12:20pm today.

It adds that his next of kin was contacted by an assigned Welfare Officer, who informed of his passing.

Commissioner of Prisons Deopersad Ramoutar, says a cause of death has not been determined, and would be revealed by an autopsy.

The Prison Service also stated that a separate investigation will be initiated by the TTPS.

Brown was in prison having been charged with murder.

In its initial statement on the incident on Tuesday, the Prison Service stated that no-life threatening injuries had been recorded.

It also confirmed that several inmates and guards had been injured, however their current status remains unknown.

Questions have also reportedly been raised about the cause and sequence of events leading to the fracas, particularly of the Prison Service’s claim that it began after an inmate became “violent and uncontrollable”.
