Independent Senator condemns Tarouba Ramleela Grounds desecration

Independent Senator Deoroop Teemal has joined in the condemnation of the desecration of the Tarouba Ramleela Grounds and other similar incidents.

As he began his contribution to the budget debate in the Senate yesterday, he spoke on Sunday’s destruction of an effigy of Rawan.

More widely, he noted that over the past three years, there have been a “string of incidents” regarding the desecration of temples.

Last year, the Carapo Shiv Mandir was broken into and corned beef was cooked on the premises.

Senator Teemal, also NCIC President, said some of the people who use such facilities believe police are being dismissive by blaming a homeless or mentally-ill person.

The Senator, though, added that to use alcohol or meat to desecrate a temple requires a high level of organization.

He insisted that there should not be a dismissive approach to such incidents, saying that they could end up causing serious problems.
