A volcano has erupted this week on Iceland’s southwest peninsula of Reykjanes.

According to BBC News, this follows weeks of intense earthquake activity and the evacuation of about 4,000 people in Grindavik last month.

Iceland has been bracing for volcanic activity for weeks.

Since late October, the region around the capital Reykjavik has been experiencing an increase in earthquake activity.

This week’s eruption can be seen from Reykjavik, which is about 42km (26 miles) north-east of Grindavik.
