Hurricane Beryl kills at least one in Jamaica

Hurricane Beryl hit Jamaica with intense wind and rain, with at least one death confirmed on the island.

The storm is now moving away from the island and heading towards the Cayman Islands, with Jamaica’s hurricane warning discontinued.

However, not before it caused flooding and power outages and killed a woman in Hanover when a tree fell on her home.

This was reportedly announced by Richard Thompson, acting director general at Jamaica’s disaster agency in an interview on local news.

Moving forward, the National Hurricane Centre says the core of Beryl, now a category three storm, is expected just south of the Cayman Islands early today and over the Yucatan Peninsula early on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Jamaica Gleaner reports that the United Nations has announced that US$4 million will be made available from the Central Emergency Response Fund.

These funds are intended to kickstart humanitarian operations in Jamaica, Grenada and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in the wake of Hurricane Beryl.
