Guyana-Venezuela border matter: ICJ to deliver Order on Friday

This Friday, the International Court of Justice will deliver its Order on Guyana’s request in relation to Venezuela and the Essequibo region.

In a statement, the ICJ said a public sitting will take place in the Hague, during which time Court President, Judge Joan Donoghue, will read the Order.

Guyana claims to have evidence that Venezuela intends to gain ownership of the Essequibo region through a referendum to be held on December 3rd 2023.

In its brief statement, the ICJ recalled that on March 29th 2018, Guyana filed an Application instituting proceedings against Venezuela.

In the application, Guyana asked the Court to confirm the legal validity and binding effect of the 1899 Arbitral Award.

That Award established the border between Venezuela and what was then British Guiana.
