Guyana has rejected calls to engage Venezuela on the territorial boundaries matter, currently before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
In a release yesterday, the Foreign Affairs Ministry noted that it remains committed to the process of the court to resolve the issue and will not employ any actions to undermine the its authority.
It also dismissed comments made by a senior Chinese diplomat, who said that the border controversy between both countries can be resolved through friendly negotiations.
The Guyana-Venezuela border controversy is currently before the ICJ, however despite a December 2023 agreement between both leaders committing to regional peace, on March 1, 2025, a Venezuelan naval vessel entered Guyana’s waters and approached Exxon’s Prosperity Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel operating in Guyana.
