Guyana is looking at a local hydroponics farm and similar projects to support the region’s food security efforts.
The National Agricultural and Extension Institute launched a project in East Coast Demerara where the farm’s nursery has a capacity for 100,000 plants.
The nursery currently includes kale, lettuce and pak choi, among others, but only 25% of its capacity is being used.
The project forms part of Guyana’s efforts to help CARICOM achieve its goal of reducing the Caribbean’s food import bill by 25% by 2025.
Guyana President Dr Irfaan Ali explained that the intention is to build additional facilities like the nursery to meet the entire needs of CARICOM and as well as to export.
