Guyana and US sign MOU for security cooperation

Guyana and the United States have signed a memorandum of understanding to deepen security cooperation and advance plans for mutual prosperity between countries.

US State Secretary Marco Rubio and Guyana’s Foreign Affairs Minister Hugh Todd signed the agreement, which outlines a framework to address security challenges such as narcotics trafficking, transnational organised crime and broader security.

He noted the basic element of progress, transformation and prosperity is always security, drawing reference to the ongoing border controversy with Guyana and Venezuela.

In this regard, Mr Rubio pledged military support to Guyana adding there will be there will be consequences for aggressive actions if Venezuela illegally impeded on the country.

Guyana’s President Dr Irfaan Ali welcomed Mr Rubio’s reassurance of US support to ensure the country’s safety in the face of the territorial dispute with its much larger neighbour.
