Guyana AG: Justice will prevail in Venezuela/Essequibo matter

Guyana’s Attorney General is confident that “justice will prevail” when the International Court of Justice delivers its Order on Guyana’s request in relation to Venezuela and the Essequibo region.

This Friday, the Court’s President, Judge Joan Donoghue, will read the order at a public sitting.

Guyana claims to have evidence that Venezuela intends to gain ownership of the Essequibo region through a referendum to be held on December 3rd 2023.

In its application to the Court, Guyana asked it to confirm the legal validity and binding effect of the 1899 Arbitral Award.

That Award established the border between Venezuela and what was then British Guiana.

Speaking to the Guyana Chronicle, AG Anil Nandlall S.C. said legal guidance indicated “a compelling case.”
