Former Top Cop: More body cameras “will not solve the problem”

A former police commissioner believes spending more money for body cameras will not solve problems.

Over the weekend, the Trinidad Express reported that a $25 million contract was awarded for police to get 3,000 body cameras.

However, National Transformation Alliance Political Leader Gary Griffith believes the number of cameras acquired during his tenure as Top Cop is sufficient, but the cameras are not being properly utilized.

He notes that there was also the establishment of a Standard Operating Procedure which mandated officers to wear and turn on the cameras – a standard he says is not being enforced.

Mr Griffith is also questioning the cost of the contract to acquire the new cameras, saying those bought during his stint cost less than $2,000 per unit while these new ones cost over $8,000 per unit.

He is calling for answers from the TTPS and the Ministry of Finance.
