Five officers acquitted reportedly over insufficient evidence

Five police officers accused of accepting cash and marijuana as a bribe have been acquitted due to insufficient evidence.

Guardian Media reports that the court discharged PC Jabari Mc Intyre, PC Kevin Gomez, WPC Latifah Lezama, PC Keenen Williams, and PC Evans Mitchell as the prosecution repeatedly failed to present sufficient evidence to support the allegations.

It adds that the case continues in relation to two other officers they were jointly charged with.

This incident follows the recent freeing of seven police officers charged with misbehaviour in public office and perverting the course of justice, due to the prosecutor’s absence from court.

Meanwhile, the Minister in the Ministry of National Security says the seven officers recently freed could have charges re-laid against them.

The Trinidad Express says Keith Scotland made the statement as he spoke with media at MTS’ 45th anniversary celebrations.
