Passengers are still on board the M.V. Cabo Star which experienced a fire in the engine room last night.

The incident occurred after the vessel’s departure from the Port of Scarborough at 11:23pm.

In an update issued shortly after the 12PM today,the Port Authority of T&T said meals were being provided for everyone on board the vessel.

It added that the vessel will be towed from its current location to the Port of Scarborough where passengers will be offloaded.

Afterward, the vessel will be towed to Port of Spain for the following:

• Investigations by the Insurers
• Certification by the Maritime Services Division
• Repair works to Engine #2

The Authority assured that the service will resume only when the vessel has been certified safe to operate.

In the interim, vehicles weighing up to 7,000 kgs will be transported on the APT James, Buccoo Reef and Galleons Passage, based on the availability of space.

Priority will be given to foodstuff and other perishables.

INITIAL STORY

There was a fire in the engine room of the M.V. Cabo Star last night.

According to the Inter-Island Ferry Service, the incident occurred following the vessel’s departure from the Port of Scarborough at 11:23pm.

The fire was extinguished by crew members.

No injuries were reported.

The extent of the damage is yet to be determined, with an investigation to be carried out.

As a result of the incident, operation of the Cabo Star will be disrupted until further notice.
