Fire Officer – install smoke alarms and keep fire extinguishers at home

Acting Fire Station Officer David Hunt is advising persons to install smoke alarms and have fire extinguishers in their homes.

He told 103.1FM News that such measures are necessary to give an early warning in the event of any emergency.

Officer Hunt suggests a heat alarm be installed in the kitchen and smoke alarms in other rooms of the house, adding that they are not expensive.

Concerning kitchen fires, Mr Hunt says water should not be used to extinguish them.

Water should also NOT be used for fires that are electrical in nature.

For both, persons should instead use a dry chemical powder or carbon dioxide extinguisher.

His advice comes as the TTFS observed Fire Prevention Week this week.
