Environmental group Fishermen and Friends of the Sea is sounding the alarm over a growing environmental disaster in Chaguaramas.
Yesterday, Corporate Secretary Gary Aboud launched an investigation into ongoing hydrocarbon spills in the Gulf of Paria.
The probe led FFOS to Point Gorde, also known as the Chaguaramas Graveyard—a site littered with abandoned vessels.
Among them, the group discovered a wreck identified as the Bywater Liberty, a U.S.-flagged ship that’s been in Trinidadian waters since 2013.
According to FFOS, the vessel is actively leaking thick oil, particularly when it rains.
Mr. Aboud claims nothing is being done, despite reports made to the relevant authorities, as he says testing is needed to confirm whether the vessel is the source of repeated spills in the area.
