Federal appeals court rejects TikTok’s attempt to overturn law to ban it

TikTok has been rejected in its attempt to overturn a law that would see it banned or sold in early 2025 in the United States.

According to a report by BBC News, a federal appeals court upheld the law despite TikTok’s argument that it was unconstitutional due to its impact on the free speech of its 170 million US users.

The court instead said that the law “was the culmination of extensive, bipartisan action by the Congress and by successive presidents”.

TikTok says it will now go to the US Supreme Court, the country’s highest legal authority.

The US wants TikTok sold or banned because of what it says are its owners’ links to the Chinese state – links TikTok and parent company Bytedance have always denied.
