Families condemn latest CoE extension

There is condemnation of the latest extension requested by the Commission of Enquiry into the Paria-LMCS diving tragedy.

It came in a joint statement issued today by lone survivor Christopher Boodram, Nicole Greenidge – the mother of Yussuf Henry, Vanessa Kussie – the widow of Rishi Nagassar, and Celisha Kurban – the widow of Fyzal Kurban.

They say it is “an angering, irksome, unwelcome, insulting and unjust development” for the Commission to request a further extension.

They also say while they understand the need for proper approaches and outcomes to be followed, they also have “a burning entitlement to justice, accountability, and consequences”.

The statement also maintains that no one from Paria or the State appears concerned about their homes, children’s upbringing, mental wellbeing, or ensuring justice, and emphasizes that responsibilities associated with the Commission’s report cannot be seen as simply a job, but rather a critical component in the delivery of justice.

It ends by saying, “We therefore condemn this or any delay to the delivery of this report, and vow to remain vigilant in the interest of our children, families, and the memories of Fyzal Kurban, Rishi Nagassar, Kazim Ali Jr and Yussuf Henry, and the trauma that now weighs heavy in the spirit of Christopher Boodram.”

The tragic incident occurred 550 days ago, on February  25th 2022, at facilities owned by Paria Fuel Trading in Pointe-à-Pierre.
