Election petition filed to confirm Lengua/Indian Walk councillor

An Election Petition has been filed in the High Court.

On Saturday, the EBC declared that fresh elections should be held in the Lengua/Indian Walk district, after two recounts resulted in a tie between the candidates for the UNC and PNM.

In a statement today, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar claims that a ballot was rejected as it did not bear the initials of the Presiding Officer.

The party says the petition has Denacia Natalia Gopaul-Jones, an elector in the district, asking the Court to determine whether the UNC’s candidate should be validly elected.

The party will await the outcome of the proceedings and hopes that in the interim, the EBC would not rush to hold an election in the district.
