The Elections and Boundaries Commission is reminding that all workers are legally allowed time off for voting on Monday.
In a public notice, it says Election Rule 28 allows each elector two hours in addition to their normal midday meal hour.
Section 36 (2) of the Representation of the People Act also states that no employer is to make any pay deduction or exact any penalty on an employee by reason of their absence during the period.
Finally, the EBC says Section 93 of the Act warns that any employer who fails to comply, and any person who interferes with an employee’s time off for voting, is liable on summary conviction to a fine of $30,000 or to imprisonment for 12 months.
