A magnitude 4.4 earthquake was recorded just 14km off of Bridgetown, Barbados this morning.

According to the UWI Seismic Research Centre, it occurred around 7:18am.

Recently UWI issued a statement on the number of earthquakes being recorded in the area in the past few days and months.

It noted that such activity sometimes signals an even more significant magnitude earthquake, in the short term.

However, it reminded that science is still unable to predict exactly where and when such events would occur.

As such, it notes there should always be preparedness measures in place to mitigate the impact of a larger quake.
