Police have captured T&T’s first convicted human trafficker, Anthony Smith.
Smith had absconded from his court trial in September 2023 and was on the run from law enforcement.
However, yesterday evening a team of officers went to Kelly Village, Caroni and arrested Smith and a female apprentice who is believed to have been aiding and abetting.
Smith, 38, was charged in January 2016 with trafficking offences which occurred between December 2014 and July 2015.
After he absconded his trial in September 2023, the matter continued in his absence and, in November, he was found guilty on five counts of trafficking of a child.
Smith was sentenced to 15 years on each count, with the sentences to run concurrently, beginning on his arrest.
