Companies pause Red Sea shipments following attacks

Oil giant BP says it is pausing all shipments of oil through the Red Sea after recent attacks on vessels by Houthi rebels.

According to BBC News, the company says the decision, though temporary, was taken because of the “deteriorating security situation”.

A number of freight companies have also taken action after being targeted by Houthis in Yemen.

Among them is Evergreen Line – one of the world’s largest shipping firms – which is refusing Israeli cargo after attacks on vessels sailing through the Red Sea.

The company reportedly said it would instruct its container ships to suspend journeys “until further notice”.

Previously, Mediterranean Shipping Company announced that it would divert ships away from the Red Sea, while Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd both suspended Red Sea journeys.

The Red Sea is one the world’s most important routes for oil and fuel shipments, as well as for consumer goods.

The Houthi rebels have declared their support for Hamas and said they are targeting ships travelling to Israel.
