Committee hands over report on deadly fire at Farfan Street

The National Security Minister has received a report on the Fire Service’s response to the blaze that claimed the lives of Lisa Morris-Julian and two of her children.

That blaze took place on December 16th 2024 at #11 Farfan Street, Arima.

Mrs Morris-Julian was the MP for D’Abadie/O’Meara and Minister in the Education Ministry.

She perished in the fire along with her 25-year-old daughter Xianne, and six-year-old son Jesiah.

A three-member Committee, led by former Chief Fire Officer Roosevelt Bruce, was tasked with examining the events surrounding the fire, and reviewing the performance of the Arima and Tunapuna Fire Stations, on the day of the incident.

Its mandate also included a thorough review of the Fire Service’s response time, the availability of water resources, and an assessment of arrival and departure logs to ensure timely and adequate action.

The investigation also aimed to address public concerns about conflicting reports, surrounding the cause of the fire, the response and related matters.

The Committee’s final report was handed over to Minister Fitzgerald Hinds on January 10th 2025.

Minister Hinds insisted the Committee’s work was vital for transparency saying, “The unfortunate loss of MEMP Morris-Julian and her family has caused deep sorrow and public disquiet. We believe it is important to uncover the facts and present them to the public, especially in light of the questions raised regarding the Fire Service’s handling of the incident.”

The findings of the report, along with its recommendations, will be reviewed by the National Security Council.

The other two members on the Committee were: Health, Safety, Security and Environment Specialist Curt Cadet and Attorney at Law in Office of the Attorney General Ashtee Mahabir.
