Clean-up underway after Toronto floods

Major motorways in Toronto, Canada have reopened and clean-up efforts are underway after a string of storms flooded parts of the city, cut power and left drivers stranded.

Environment Canada says almost 100mm of rain fell on Toronto on Tuesday, surpassing the city’s daily record set in 1941.

Images and videos showed severe flooding across the city, cars nearly submerged, water cascading down the staircases at Union Station, and even flooding at the home of rapper, Drake.

According to BBC News, city manager Paul Johnson said the focus is both on clean-up and how to rebuild Toronto’s aging infrastructure in a flood-resilient way.

The challenge, Mr Johnson added, is doing this work while record-breaking storms continue to happen – he noted that Toronto had three 100-year storms in the last 11 years alone.
