A 9-year-old child is among four persons killed in an accident along the Solomon Hochoy Highway last night.
Around 11:30pm, officers of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch responded to a crash along the southbound lane in the vicinity the Claxton Bay flyover.
According to the TTPS, the driver of a white SUV lost control of the vehicle, causing it to run off the road and overturn numerous times.
Four of the five occupants received fatal injuries: the driver Steve Elder of Cunupia, Kizzy Cato of Laventille, Kathlyn Wright, and the child, whose name was not given by the TTPS.
All four were pronounced dead on the scene by the District Medical Officer.
Meanwhile in a separate incident, a La Brea man was killed in an accident, also along the Solomon Hochoy Highway.
Around 11pm on Friday night, a taxi lost control along the southbound lane in the vicinity Charles Street, hitting the guardrail on the center median.
The front seat passenger, named as Victor Ryan, received fatal injuries and died on the scene.
In the wake of these incidents, the TTPS is urging motorists to exercise greater care, caution and common sense when operating a vehicle on the public roadways.”
Senior Superintendent of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch, Lincoln Daly, also pointed to an increase in incidents saying, “lately my officers have been responding too often to preventable road traffic collisions on the highways, many of which involve some form of driver error, be it following too close to the vehicle in front, driving too fast for conditions, or being distracted by phone use. Drivers need to pay more attention and focus on their driving and that means obeying road traffic laws and looking out for fellow drivers.”
Police Road Safety Project Coordinator Sgt Brent Batson also emphasized the importance of wearing seatbelts: “it is concerning between Friday to Sunday morning, 160 drivers were issued fixed penalty notices (traffic tickets) for failing to wear seatbelts.”
