CCJ: Sir Shridath Ramphal was one of the region’s greatest minds

The CCJ has hailed the late Sir Shridath Ramphal as one of the region’s greatest minds in diplomacy, law and international relations.

The Guyana national, who passed away last month, was a recipient of numerous awards and honours from around the world after serving in multiple roles.

He was Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (1989-2003), Commonwealth Secretary General (1975-1990), Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guyana (1972-1975), and Assistant Attorney General of the British West Indies Federation (1958-1962). He has held the posts of Chairman of the West Indian Commission (1990-1993) and the first Director-General of the Caribbean Regional Negotiating Machinery, currently known as the CARICOM Office of Trade Negotiations.

The CCJ says his contributions to Caribbean jurisprudence and international law were unparalleled.

It adds that Sir Ramphal’s vision for an integrated Caribbean was rooted in both political and economic unity and strengthening of legal frameworks.
