Bouhmadou Nettle advisory for Tobago

An advisory has been issued in Tobago about the dangers of a plant called the Bouhmadou nettle.

The Division of Food Security & the Environment says the plant was restricted to southwest of the island Buccoo, Friendship and Courland, however the movement of soil has now transferred it to new areas.

The plant resembles young pawpaw, wild ochro or wild senna; grows to about one to four feet; and has small white flowers.

The entire plant is covered in stinging hairs which inject a poison into the skin leading to intense irritation that may last several days.

In more severe cases, there may be fever and vomiting, unconsciousness and sores, or even cardiac and respiratory issues.

Persons coming into contact with the plant are urged to seek prompt medical attention.

Bouhmadou can be destroyed by:

  • Cutting and burning – take care to not to come in contact with the plant (it penetrates jeans and khaki clothing).
  • Using a broad leaf herbicide. Care should be taken when removing soil from areas affected with Bouhmadou to other areas to prevent the plant’s further dispersal.
