BCCI secretary Jay Shah says the Impact Player rule is not “permanent”, with a decision on its use in the IPL to be taken following discussions with stakeholders after the T20 World Cup.
The rule allows teams to swap one player for another during the match and has been cited as a key reason for the massive scores recorded in IPL 2024.
Some have been critical, with Rohit Sharma arguing that it has been hampering the growth of all-rounders since teams are now including more specialists.
Shah says implementation in the IPL was “like a test case”, adding that the BCCI will consult with players, franchises, and broadcasters to see if it is making the game more competitive or not.
He emphasized though that while the Impact Player rule was “not permanent”, he is not saying that it will go.
