Students of the St. Dominic Savio Barataria R.C. Primary School held an anti-violence/anti-crime walk through their community this morning.
Senior teacher Ms Guppy told 103.1FM News that the walk was to underscore the need for peace in the community and T&T.
She said the students were interested in highlighting the issue as many have been victims of crime, or are fearful of the state of crime in the country.
Also, Ms Guppy says while there are no incidents of bullying or school violence at the school, parents have to accept more responsibility for their children’s discipline.
Meanwhile, the school’s social worker Giselle Khan acknowledged the Education Ministry’s efforts with regard to social work, however she said more recruitment is needed to ensure all schools are properly resourced.
The walk was held as a part of the Education Ministry’s Cultural Transformation policy.
According to the Education Ministry’s website, the Cultural Transformation Policy is vehicle to drive cultural transformation, with a goal of creating citizens with positive values, attitudes and behaviours.
It added that while cultural transformation through education is not immediate, it is an achievable goal over the course of 7 years, which represents the time a typical student takes to progress through all the stages of primary school.
