Ballon d’Or nominees named

For the first time since 2003, both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are not on the list of nominees for the Ballon d’Or.

Messi is a record eight-time winner while Ronaldo has five Ballon d’Ors to his name.

Both did not feature on the list of 30 players announced today.

The prize will be presented on October 28th 2024.

Players in the running include: Vinicius Junior, Rodri, Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal.

A first-time winner is guaranteed since none of those on the list have yet won the Ballon d’Or.

On the women’s side, five U.S. stars made the list of nominees, including captain and midfielder Lindsey Horan, goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and forwards Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith and Mallory Swanson.

Their nominations come a few weeks after helping the U.S. win the 2024 Olympic gold medal in women’s soccer.

Also in the running are Spain’s Aitana Bonmatí and Alexia Putellas.

The award went to Bonmatí las year, and to to Putellas in the two years before that.
