The TTPS is investigating the cause of a fire in Arima this morning that claimed the lives of three persons, including Minister and MP Lisa Morris-Julian.
Senior Superintendent Maynard-Wilson has confirmed that the other victims are the MP’s two children, ages 25 and 6.
The blaze at Farfan Street destroyed the family’s home, and left three other relatives with injuries.
As news of the incident broke this morning, the scene was visited by a number of Government officials, including Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, and Ministers Pennelope Beckles, Camille Robinson-Regis and Stuart Young.
Mrs Morris-Julian served as Arima Mayor from 2016 to 2020, before becoming MP for D’Abadie/O’Meara and Minister in the Ministry of Education.
Condolences and tributes have since begun to pour in.
Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said he was devastated by the loss, adding that the PNM had lost one of its finest representatives.
Mr Young meanwhile described her as “someone that gave so willingly and without any expectation” and hailed her commitment to service, country, the PNM and her family and friends.
A government statement says Mrs Morris-Julian was an unrelenting voice for her constituency, government and the PNM, and will be remembered for her love and support for her family and others.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar says the MP’s passing was “horrific” and offered her prayers and condolences.
Opposition Chief Whip David said he was deeply saddened by the unfortunate passing, while Naparima MP Rodney Charles described Mrs Morris-Julian as a quiet, dignified force that could not be ignored.
NTA Leader Gary Griffith referred to her death as a profound loss, and expressed disappointment in rumours and speculation which have reportedly been spread about the incident.
Condolences have also been expressed by MP for Tabaquite Michelle Benjamin who expressed solidarity with the Arima community and Mayaro MP Rushton Paray who described her as a remarkable individual whose life was devoted to service.
Alderman at the Arima Borough Corporation, Derek King, who is also the National Football Team’s Head Coach, expressed heartfelt condolences.
