There’s really nothing like a mother’s love.
Music maestro AR Rahman recently revealed that his mother once sold her jewelry to buy his first music recorder.
During a conversation with Imtiaz Ali, Mohit Chauhan, and Irshad Kamil for Netflix, Rahman said when he started his studio, he had no money to buy equipment: “When I built my studio, I didn’t have money to buy an amplifier or equalizer. There was just an AC with a shelf and carpet. I used to be sitting there not having money to buy anything. I built this and was sitting inside with no equipment.
He added that it was his mother who got him going: “My first recorder came after my mom gave her jewels to be pledged. That is when I felt empowered. I could see my future, that one moment I changed.”
The rest, is history.
Rahman is now a highly accomplished music composer and producer, with National Film Awards, Academy Awards, Grammys, BAFTAs, and many more accolades to his name.
Most recently, he has garnered praise for his work in Imtiaz Ali’s latest film “Amar Singh Chamkila”.
