Alberto weakens to depression; expected to dissipate today over Mexico

Alberto has weakened to a tropical depression but continues to cause heavy rain and flash flooding across north-eastern Mexico.

As the first named Tropical Storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, Alberto caused three deaths in the Nuevo Leon region of Mexico and significant rainfall in Texas.

The National Hurricane Centre says the system is likely to dissipate over Mexico later today.

The NHC is monitoring two other disturbances – the first, east of Bahamas with a 40% chance of cyclone development over 48 hours, and the other in the south-western Gulf of Mexico with a 20% chance of development over 48 hours.
