AG Nandlall: Guyana to modernize domestic violence laws

Guyana Attorney General Anil Nandlall says the Domestic Violence Act will be repealed and replaced with modern laws.

According to iNews Guyana, he highlighted deficiencies will with the current Act during his weekly programme, Issues in the News.

iNews quotes the AG as saying that the issue of domestic violence has not reduced in the country and, as such, the law has been rendered ineffective.

He explains that the current Act was essentially a legislation in civil but the new bill will have both civil and criminal remedies and will include harsh penalties for perpetrators.

However, the AG says law alone cannot tackle the issue and assures that work is ongoing on a number of initiatives, including a study on the causes of gender-based homicide.
