Four vehicles were damaged by fire today at UWI’s St Augustine Campus.
Shortly before 11:30am, authorities were alerted to the blaze in the JFK Staff Carpark, located on the southern side of the campus.
Fire officers were quickly on the scene and managed to contain the flames, with no injuries reported.
The Fire Service says its investigations have since revealed that the fire was accidental.
In a statement, it says there was an ongoing mechanical repair to the fuel pump of a Nissan B13, with the fire starting in the fuel pump area in the backseat of the vehicle.
It adds that the battery was not disconnected during the repair works for the vehicle.
The fire then quickly spread to three other vehicles: a Kia Soul, a Hyundai Ioniq and a Mitsubushi Lancer.
UWI says work is now underway to assess, clean, and undertake the necessary repairs to restore the carpark to full functionality.
