1st American pope selected

The new Pope is Robert Prevost.

He is the first American pontiff and will take the name Pope Leo XIV.

The 69-year-old has appeared on the balcony overlooking St Peter’s Square, where he greeting the thousands gathered below.

The newly elected, Chicago-born pontiff, paid tribute to his predecessor, Pope Francis.

He is also quoted as saying, “Humanity needs Christ as a bridge to be reached by God and his love. Help us, and help each other, build bridges.”
