18-year-old fatally shot by police in Belmont incident

One man was fatally shot during a police manhunt in Belmont on Friday.

Around 11:20am, a black Nissan Tiida with three occupants approached a group of persons along Serrano Road.

Shots were fired, resulting in injuries to two persons: a 50-year-old man who was shot in the leg, and a 24-year-old man who was hit in the neck and head.

The assailants attempted to flee by reversing the vehicle, but after a loud explosion inside the car, it crashed.

The three suspects fled the vehicle but were soon pursued by responding officers.

Witnesses reported seeing three men exit the vehicle, one covered in blood and two armed with firearms, fleeing the scene on foot towards St Francois Valley Road, in the vicinity of the St Francois Girls College.

The officers received information which led them to search a drain along St. Francois Valley Road.

They found and held one suspect: a 31-year-old man who reportedly had an AR-15 rifle in his possession.

While searching the drain, officers also encountered another suspect armed with a rifle.

He allegedly refused to surrender and pointed the weapon at the officers who discharged their service firearms.

The man, later identified as an 18-year-old from Upper McKai Lands, Belmont, was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

With regard to the victims of the initial shooting, the 50-year-old man is said to be stable, while the 24-year-old is listed as being in a critical condition.

Also, given the proximity of the manhunt to the St Francois Girls College, the TTPS says personnel from the Victim and Witness Support Unit will be visit at 8.30am on Monday 30th September to debrief the students and teachers, in collaboration the Ministry of Education.
