In the lead up to Tobago’s Carnival over the past weekend, police issued over 148 traffic tickets and arrested eight drivers.

According to the TTPS, a special unit was deployed to the island from last Tuesday, especially since a 600% year-on-year increase in road traffic deaths was recorded in Tobago for 2023.

Seven of the eight arrested drivers were charged with drunk driving while one was charged with driving a motor vehicle though not a holder of a Drivers Permit.

A Tobago Magistrate handed out $54,400 in fines to the drivers for the charges.
