PM: New building to come for Housing Ministry

In the next few weeks, government will turn the sod for a new building for the Housing Ministry, to take it out of its current rental premises.

Dr Keith Rowley made the announcement while speaking at the sod turning ceremony for the Social Development Ministry Headquarters.

He explained that the Housing Ministry’s monthly rent is around $500,000 and noted that building is “substandard.”

Dr Rowley said the “old workers’ bank” building is being pulled down to facilitate the construction of the new Ministry building.

The PM added that these plans are being made through a whole of government approach, noting that the Health Ministry’s new building now has all of its associated divisions and PAHO under one roof.

Meanwhile, regarding the new Social Development Ministry Headquarters, Minister Donna Cox says the building, located along Tragarete Road, will save the Ministry nearly 15 million dollars a year in rental costs.

She adds that the process of applying for pension, grants and other family support services will become easier thanks to digital enhancements being implemented.

According to the Minister, since the office will be digitalized, clients will have access to online applications, information and services; with shorter application timeframes for approvals and faster response rates for queries.

The 10 storey building is set to be completed in two years’ time.
