PM speaks at Energy Conference in Guyana

Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley says collaborative effort is needed to ensure energy security for the region and combat the negative impacts of climate change.

Speaking at the opening of the International Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo in Guyana this morning, he said it was imperative that the region effectively uses its resources, whether hydrocarbon or renewable.

Dr Rowley pointed out that CARICOM countries, on average, import an estimated 87% of their oil, leaving them vulnerable to energy market volatilities.

He added that only by working together can they attain the objective of fostering productive and resilient economies.

During his address, Dr Rowley also stated, “With the emergence of our region as a significant player in the hydrocarbon industry, we are presented with a valuable chance to proactively utilize our combined knowledge and expertise in order to maximize future prospects.”

He also pointed to the planned regional ferry service, saying he is confident it can grow into a major catalyst for welcomed regional collaboration, development and diversification.
