The threat level in Tobago could be elevated as the efforts continue to contain an oil-like substance leaking from an overturned vessel off the coast of Cove Eco Industrial and Business Park.
Speaking from the site today, THA Chief Secretary Farley Augustine says it is currently at Tier 2.
The vessel has been visually identified as the “Gulfstream” however Mr Augustine says due to unsafe conditions, Coast Guard divers have been unable to properly assess the wreck.
The substance is believed to be diesel, though this is yet be confirmed by the EMA which has taken samples for assessment.
Crews have been deployed for clean-up and to remove Sargassum which trapped some of the spill, while near-shore and other forms of absorbent booms have been deployed.
Mr Augustine also confirmed damage to the reef in the area.
The THA Chief Secretary adds that while the Ministries of Works and Energy have been assisting the containment and clean-up efforts, he is yet to speak with the Ministers themselves.
According to TEMA, beaches along Tobago’s Atlantic coast have been affected by the oil-like substance.
For safety reasons, it is now urging fisherfolk and beachgoers to stay clear of the area extending from Rockly Bay to Canoe Bay.
