TUCO President backs calypso, recognizes Court’s authority

TUCO President Ainsley King has issued a statement clarifying the organization’s position regarding the recent judgment involving Inshan Ishmael and Weston Rawlins aka “Cro Cro”.

On Monday, a judge ordered the calypsonian to pay Mr Ishamel $250,000 for defamation linked to his 2023 song “Another Sat Is Outside”.

Mr King says while TUCO has unwavering support for the art form and its freedom of expression, it also recognizes the authority of the courts as the ultimate arbiters of justice, even if it may not always agree with their decisions.

He adds that TUCO’s position revolves around fostering a robust business model that attracts individuals from diverse backgrounds and revitalizes the artform.

Mr. King went on to say that political commentary remains integral to telling stories, adding “We stand firmly behind calypso and its practitioners, as well as the principles of natural justice. We encourage the continued use of metaphorical language to convey political messages, preserving the art’s subtlety and creativity. We trust that common sense will prevail, and any misunderstandings will be resolved amicably.”
